Potassium

Urine potassium levels test can help determine the cause of abnormal blood potassium levels, identify the cause of some abnormal kidney function tests or guide treatment. At Private Blood Tests London, we perform urine potassium levels testing available in millimoles of potassium for each litre of urine (mmol/L) for a urine specimen. The results of urine samples collected in 24 hours are in millimoles of potassium/day (mmol/d).

We interpret urine potassium (kaliuria) levels with blood potassium levels. The body usually eliminates excess potassium via urine. High urine potassium levels (hyperkaliuria) may cause high blood potassium levels (hyperkalemia).

Hyperkaliuria may also occur when the body loses excess potassium. When the body loses much potassium through urine, blood potassium levels will be low-normal or low. Kidney disease, muscle damage or eating disorders can cause hyperkaliuria.

If the potassium level in the blood is low, resulting from insufficient dietary intake, urine potassium levels should also be low (hypokaliuria). This condition may be due to some drug intake, such as lithium, beta-blockers or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or insufficient aldosterone secretion by the adrenal glands.
