This test measures total testosterone in the blood. In men it is used to investigate low libido, erectile problems, tiredness, loss of muscle mass and to monitor testosterone treatment. In women it can help investigate excess hair growth, acne or irregular periods. The test costs £71.25 plus the £50 phlebotomy fee, and results are usually available in 1 day.
Testosterone peaks in the morning, so a sample taken between 7am and 10am gives the most reliable reading. A low result is usually repeated on a second morning before any diagnosis is made.
In the morning, ideally between 7am and 10am, when levels are at their highest and reference ranges apply.
Fasting is not required. A morning sample matters more than fasting for this test.
Total testosterone includes hormone bound to proteins. Free testosterone is the small unbound fraction. This test reports total testosterone.
